Network Monitoring is essential for every network administrator. It determines how effective your IT team is at solving problems or even completely eliminating them. Even small organisations need visibility of what is happening within their network environment. This includes the ability to know what is happening with their servers, network infrastructure and the traffic that flows across the network and all connected network devices.
There are close to one hundred products on the market today (a combination of commercial and open source) that provide some level of network performance monitoring (NPM) capabilities. The majority of the products utilise standards that have been used for the past 20 years such as SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and recently WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) which is Microsoft’s implementation of the Web Based Enterprise Management.
